A CLINICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL OVERVIEW
ABSTRACT: Cholera, a clinical-epidemiologic syndrome
caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, causing severe
diarrhea, is one of the greatest causes of mortality in
humans. Cholera has already swept the world in seven
pandemic waves and thus evokes fear because of its past
history. This article examines the disease in terms of
its widespread distribution, past pandemics, symptoms,
causal pathogen with its toxicity, diagnosis, prevention
and treatment of the disease with special reference to
the potentiality of designed cholera vaccines.
